The role of Embassy of Ireland to Sierra Leone is to promote and protect Ireland’s values and interests and to deepen bilateral, political, economic and cultural cooperation between Ireland and Sierra Leone. We promote our values in support of a fairer, more just, secure and sustainable Sierra Leone with a focus on the empowerment of women and girls. Through the Irish Aid programme, the Embassy aims to improve access to quality education for marginalised children and youth especially girls.
The Embassy is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and results orientated individual to join the
Embassy team as Senior Education Adviser. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the growth and
development of the Irish Aid education programme in Sierra Leone.
Role and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Head of Development, the Senior Education Advisor will have responsibility for overseeing and developing the Education portfolio and providing technical advice on education related programming. The Senior Education Advisor will work closely with other colleagues across all pillars of the Irish Aid programme, in particular with the gender pillar, and the governance and food security and nutrition pillars. The Senior Education Advisor will represent the Embassy on an education donor technical working group and education sector coordination mechanisms, and will provide advice and support to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) in the roll-out of Free Quality Education.
In summary, the Senior Education Advisor will be required to:
Support the design, development, delivery and monitoring of the Embassy’s education programme and contribute to the Embassy’s overall strategy and business planning.
Manage existing education programmes, grants and partnerships, and strengthen linkages with
HQ support to the education sector.
Represent the Embassy on national education dialogue and coordination groups.
Provide or commission research and analysis on education issues in Sierra Leone to inform
To be considered eligible, a candidate must have:
Master’s degree in a relevant field.
At least five years of specific post qualification experience at the same level in a similar role with a bilateral, multi -lateral organization, Government or NGO.
Demonstrated experience in strong programme planning, implementation, management and monitoring skills.
An excellent understanding of education issues and the education sector in Sierra Leone.
Ability to work as part of a team and in partnership with other stakeholders.
Proficiency in the Microsoft suite of applications.
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Commitment to Irish Aid’s values.
The legal right to work in Sierra Leone. All locally hired staff are required to have a legal entitlement to live and work in Sierra Leone prior to hiring;
Excellent leadership, decision-making, analysis, interpersonal, written and verbal Englishlanguage communication skills, a track record of high performance and delivering results and a strong commitment to Irish public service values of honesty, integrity, impartiality, ethical behaviour, reliability, resilience and initiative.
Terms and Conditions
The successful candidates will be hired on a fixed-term contractual basis and will be based at the Irish Embassy, Freetown and will be expected to undertake regular in-country travel.
There is a 3-month probation period, after which performance is reviewed and a two-year contract confirmed.
Salaries are paid direct to a bank account, therefore the successful candidate must have a bank
